Ronghua (velvet flowers) is a Chinese craft: degummed silk, shaped by hand over a wire frame, one petal at a time. Most of the work happens with both hands busy, which is exactly why a steady stand matters — the flower has to stay put while the silk goes around it.
This stand is bamboo, with metal fittings, and its height adjusts so the work sits at the angle your hands like. That is the whole point of a tool like this: not to be noticed, but to be steady.

I'm Hong. I make Chinese silk flowers by hand in Guang'an, Sichuan — Chanhua and Ronghua, the two crafts my grandmother taught me over six years.
She is eighty-nine now and has made these flowers since she was a girl. I left the craft for an office job in Guangzhou, missed the quiet of making something with my hands, and came back. Now I do this full time, and every piece in this shop is wound by me.
