Chanhua DIY Kit | Hydrangea Hairpin

A complete chanhua kit for one hydrangea hairpin.

Chanhua (缠花) is a Chinese folk craft: dyed silk floss is wound, strand by strand, around a shaped copper-wire frame until a flower appears. It is three-dimensional and sculptural — closer to making a tiny silk sculpture than to sewing or embroidery.

A hydrangea is one of the showpieces of the craft. The round head is built from many small florets, and every single one is wound by hand — which is why this kit takes longer than our single-flower designs. In Chinese flower language the hydrangea stands for reunion and lasting happiness, so it has long been a motif for weddings and New Year.

All the craft materials you need to finish one hairpin are in the box:

• 2–4 colours of dyed silk floss
• 2 paper templates for the petal shapes
• 2 adhesive backing sheets
• 2 beads
• 1 hairpin base
• 1 glue stick
• 1 brush
• 1 spool of copper wire
• A step-by-step English video tutorial

You only need two things of your own: a pair of scissors and a lighter (the lighter seals the thread ends so the silk does not fray).

Who it suits

• Hanfu wearers — a hydrangea head sits beautifully above a bun or at the top of a braid, and nobody else will have your colourway
• Total beginners — the templates show where each floret starts, and the video walks through every wrap
• Anyone who wants to slow down — a hydrangea is deliberately repetitive work. Most people finish it over a couple of quiet evenings and forget their phone in the meantime

What you end up with

One hydrangea hairpin of your own, in colours you chose — not a factory's. The finished piece is about 8 cm.

• Time: roughly 4–7 hours for a first piece — the round head is many small florets, so allow more time than a single-flower kit
