Buying Chinese Hair Accessories Wholesale: A Buyer's Guide

Silk Lineage Studio5 min read

Short answer: You can buy handmade Chinese hair accessories wholesale at a minimum of 20 pieces per design, with samples first, your own branding on the packaging, and a 3 to 6 week production window after you approve the sample. Mixed crafts in one order are welcome.

Most first-time buyers ask the wrong question. They ask "what is your price?" when the answer depends on four things they have not decided yet: the craft, the complexity, the quantity, and how much of the work you want done for you. This guide walks through those four, then the parts buyers forget — sampling, duty, and what "handmade" actually does to your reorder timing.

Who this guide is for

  • Boutiques and concept stores adding a heritage jewellery line
  • Hanfu shops and rental studios that need matching hair ornaments
  • Museum and heritage-site gift shops
  • Wedding planners sourcing Chinese hairpins for a single event
  • Online sellers who want a private-label range instead of reselling someone else's

If you are buying for yourself rather than for resale, start with the shop instead — the rest of this page is about volume.

What "handmade" changes about your order

Chanhua is not stamped out of a mould. Dyed mulberry silk is wound strand by strand around a paper-and-wire frame, and a single complex hairpin can take an experienced maker several hours. That has three consequences you should plan around:

  1. Reorder timing is not instant. A factory can restock in days; a studio cannot. If you sell out in November, the next batch may not exist until December.
  2. Two pieces are never identical. Expect small variation in petal width and thread sheen. If you need uniformity for a photograph, say so before production, not after.
  3. Peak season books out. August to November is when everyone orders. Studios take orders in the sequence they arrive.

None of this is a defect. It is the reason a customer pays three times more for your shelf than for a mass-market hair clip.

What to check before you order

Check Why it matters What to ask
Sample before bulk Colour and size read differently in person than in photos Ask for a physical sample, not just images
Wire and base metal Nickel allergies are common; returns are expensive Ask what the pin and wire are made of
Weight per piece Postage is billed by weight, not by value Ask for grams per unit before quoting your retail price
Packaging method A crushed petal becomes a refund Ask how pieces are boxed for transit
Duty terms DDP and DDU change your landed cost by 10 to 25 percent Ask for both quotes
Restock window Handmade means long lead times Ask how many weeks a reorder takes

Which craft should you stock

Each craft sells to a different customer, so a first order usually mixes two.

Craft Look Sells best to Typical use
Chanhua Crisp, glossy silk petals with visible thread work Collectors, gift buyers, heritage shops Brooches, statement hairpins
Ronghua Soft matte velvet, denser and warmer Hanfu wearers, photographers, seasonal gift ranges Hair ornaments, festive pieces
Luodian Iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay Jewellery-focused boutiques Pendants, earrings, modern pieces

If you are unsure, stocking one design from each craft tells you more in a month than a spreadsheet will in a year. Our comparison of chanhua and ronghua explains the difference in technique and in who buys them.

Minimums, sampling and lead times

  • Minimum order: 20 pieces per design. Designs and crafts can be mixed in one order.
  • Samples: charged at the single-unit retail price plus shipping. When you place the bulk order, half the sample cost is credited back.
  • Lead time: typically 3 to 6 weeks after you approve the sample, depending on quantity and complexity.
  • Payment: 50 percent deposit to start production, 50 percent before dispatch. Bank transfer or PayPal.

The sample stage is where money is saved. Approving a colour from a phone screenshot is how buyers end up with 200 pieces in a shade their customers do not want.

Private label: what you can and cannot change

You can put your logo on the box, add your own care card and hang tag, and have the parcel arrive with no seller branding at all. Custom colourways are possible too, but they usually require a larger minimum because the silk has to be dyed to your specification.

What you cannot change is the technique. The piece will still be wound by hand, and the maker's variation will still be there. For most brands that is the selling point rather than the problem.

The costs buyers forget

Your unit price is not your landed cost. Add:

  1. Freight — quoted by weight band, so ask for grams per unit early.
  2. Duty and tax — ask for DDP and DDU quotes so you can budget rather than guess.
  3. Packaging you replace — if you rebrand, your own box and card cost money.
  4. Shrinkage — budget for a small percentage of damage or seconds, especially for fragile petals.
  5. Your own photography — heritage pieces photograph badly on a white background; most brands reshoot them.

How to place a first order

  1. Send the brief: quantity, craft, deadline, branding. Photos of anything similar help enormously.
  2. Receive a quote within two business days, with unit price, shipping options and a production window.
  3. Approve a sample. We send photos first, then the physical piece if you want to hold it.
  4. Pay the deposit, then receive quality photos before dispatch.
  5. Pay the balance and receive tracked shipping.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for wholesale Chinese hair accessories?

Twenty pieces per design. You can mix designs and crafts within a single order, so a low-risk first order might be 20 Chanhua hairpins and 20 Ronghua blooms to test two ranges at once.

Can I order a sample before committing to bulk?

Yes, and you should. Samples are charged at the single-unit retail price plus shipping, and half of that cost is credited back when you place the bulk order.

How long does production take?

Typically three to six weeks after you approve the sample. Peak season from August to November books up early, so tell us your deadline before you commit.

Can you ship without your branding?

Yes. We can print your logo on the box, add your branded care card and hang tag, and dispatch with no Silk Lineage markings at all.

Do you provide certificates of authenticity?

Yes. Every wholesale order can include a printed certificate naming the craft, the technique and the artisan who made the pieces — useful for museum shops and heritage retailers.
